‘Ohia Lehua: A Day in the Life
One misty afternoon on the eastern slope of Haleakala, an amazing week began. It had been a dry season and there were very few blossoms on the ‘Ohia and Mamane trees. One exception was a Lehua tree rising up from the gulch, full of flowers and seedpods. This tree became the host of many of our Hawaiian endemic birds, including a pair of ’Akohekohe. These were the first I had ever seen in the two years I have been shooting Maui’s native birds. For the next week or so, ‘Apapane, I’iwi, Amakihi, and ‘Akohekohe darted and danced around, sharing the nectar and seeds of this beautiful tree. An amazing sight to see! I hope it conveys some of the wonder and awe I find in our native forest’s life. >>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>> This picture is a composite of 25+ images taken on 8-31-08. <<<<<<<<<< >>>>>>>>>> Copyright - Mike Neal 2008- - - - Powered by Zoomify.com
